Maui Poke With Seaweed And Fresh Tuna

If you have any questions about this recipe, just leave them on the YouTube video and I'll get back with you ASAP!

Just got back from Maui where I enjoyed a variety recipes made with locally caught fish like kahala (amberjack), mahi-mahi, ono and tunas. My favorite was the local Maui poke! I would stop by every local market I could just to try their versions of tuna pokes. Funny thing is, while I was busy eating tuna in Maui, all my buddies in Southern California were busy catching tuna off Point Loma! So this recipe is for my buddies and their fresh caught tuna.

My new Maui poke recipe is very traditional Hawaiian. It includes seaweed, green onions, oyster sauce, Hawaiian sea salt and of course, fresh tuna. I invite you to try this recipe, especially if you're too busy catching tuna and have no time to fly to Maui!

Hawaiian Pokes

Here's what you can expect in most small grocery markets throughout Maui. A big selection of pokes and super fresh!

If you're looking for a yellowtail poke, try my yellowtail with mango poke. Yummy!!

Maui Poke (serves 3)

1 pound tuna, 1/2-3/4-in diced

1 bundle green onions, chopped

1 Hawaiian papaya, 1/2-3/4-in diced (or Mexican papaya)

1/3 cup of fresh seaweed (available at Asian markets)

1/3 cup of soy sauce

1/3 cup of oyster sauce

1 large lime juiced, or 2 medium limes

1 tablespoon of brown sugar

1 tablespoon of Hawaiian sea salt

Make the Maui Poke

1. Start by making the poke sauce first. Mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, lime juice and brown sugar into a small mixing bowl. Refrigerate until needed.

2. In a large mixing bowl add the green onions, papaya, seaweed and tuna. Mix, and then only lightly coat the poke with the poke sauce from the refrigerator! Garnish with a pinch of Hawaiian sea salt, then serve in a bowl and enjoy!!
